WH has provided loans to 66 women to help them start small businesses. They had been unable to get commercial loans and in any event the interest rates were cost prohibitive. Some of these businesswomen now operate vegetable stands in a local market. In 2017 we set up irrigation projects at Kazembe and Laini Villages through loans to 54 women. Treadle pumps move the water through plastic pipes from a lake to dozens of garden plots where the women raise vegetables to be sold at a market. Other projects, including another village irrigation program and a goat “pass on” project at 2 villages are in the planning stages. A donation toward Micro-Loans projects helps empower women to support their families and become independent entrepreneurs.
